On Tuesday 15th July 2024, Abu Sayeed, 25, a coordinator of the ongoing quota reform movement at Begum Rokeya University (BRUR), was shot to death by the Bangladesh police when police fired rubber bullets at him from a very close range.
On that noon, the students participating in the quota movement at BRUR marched from the Lalbagh area towards the campus. They were obstructed by the police when tried to enter the campus. A clash erupted and the police then fired rubber bullets at the students. Abu Sayeed was in the front and brave enough to face the bullets from a close range. Multiple bullets hit his chest and he bravely embraced the death.
Abu Sayeed was the brightest star in his entire family. His father Mokbul Hossain is a day laborer by profession and his mother Monowara Begum is a house-wife, they both were shell-shocked upon hearing the news. Abu Sayeed was extremely talented and gifted child among his siblings. The family had sky-high dreams about him. Abu Sayeed was loved by everyone in the village and his friend circle due to his intellect and friendly behavior.
We mourn Abu Sayeed’s martyrdom with utmost regard. His sacrifice will remain as an example of how a son of the soil can fearlessly stand up for the cause of the country.
