GBAHR has recently added a feature to its website through which UK residents can request their respective MPs to ensure that the UK government does not grant political asylum to perpetrators involved in the massacres that took place during the Bangladeshi student movement in July 2024.
The feature lets anyone find their MP and write to them by simply entering name, address and postcode on a page. It takes a click to prepare the entire email and another to send the email, which also includes the foreign secretary in its CC. The email draws MP’s immediate attention to a grave issue involving certain political leaders, state officials and non-state actors from Bangladesh who are currently seeking or planning to seek political asylum in United Kingdom.
The email adds that –
These individuals (the Bangladeshi criminals) have a well-documented history of criminal activities, crimes against humanity and prolific violators of human rights including the orchestration of mass student killings along with minors (30+ children Bangladesh: Dozens of children killed in protests during the 2024 massacre in Bangladesh. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c16j6w1dxl1o)
The ruling political leaders and members of the government supported student wings (Bangladesh Chhatra League, BCL, a tier-iii terrorist outfit in USA) have been directly implicated in heinous acts of violence against students and other civilians. These actions have not only violated fundamental human rights but have also fostered a climate of fear and oppression in Bangladesh. As the people of Bangladesh rise against these criminals seeking justice and accountability, it is imperative that the United Kingdom stands in solidarity with the victims of such atrocities.
The email also says that –
Granting political asylum to these individuals would not only undermine the efforts of the Bangladeshi people to bring them to justice but would also contradict United Kingdom’s own principles of justice and human rights. It is crucial that the United Kingdom does not become a safe haven for those who have committed gross violations of human rights and have sought to escape accountability through political asylum. They will threaten us here.
Many of them are Politically Exposed Person (PEP) under UK laws and should be investigated for money laundering offences. A Bangladeshi minister reportedly invested over £200 million in UK. https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2024-bangladesh-land-minister-uk-property/
The email also urges the MP, to raise this matter at the parliament and with the foreign secretary to thoroughly investigate the backgrounds of any such asylum seekers from Bangladesh and to take decisive action to ensure that United Kingdom does not become a refuge for those fleeing justice for their criminal activities. The integrity of our immigration and asylum policies must be upheld to reflect our national values and our commitment to supporting victims of human rights abuses, not their perpetrators.

GBAHR hopes to be able to add such features to reach out to representatives in other countries as well especially where the Bangladeshi diaspora is active and large in number.
